FUN YOGA SHAPES TO CHALLENGE YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS THIS WINTER with Kate Kendall

03/06/2020

5 Fun Yoga shapes to challenge you and your friends this Winter with Kate Kendall

With Winter just beginning, it’s important to find movement and exercise that keeps your body and mind content, and importantly, can be shared with others. Yoga is a way that many of us are able to find resilience, focus, strength and concentration in movement.

In her second session for Comvita’s ‘Wellness From Home’ session, Co-Founder and Director of Yoga at Flow Athletic, Kate Kendall, showcases some fun Yoga shapes to practice with friends and challenge your focus, strength and breath work.

"Inspired by a wonderful quote by Plato - “The Dance, of all the arts, is the one that most influences the soul,” the session explores being grateful for the gift of movement, and sharing this with others.

Mula Bandha and Breath Work

Before starting the yoga flow, it’s important to talk about the power of Mula Bandha (the root lock). Mula Bandha is a key part of instilling grace in our movement on the Yoga mat, but can also teach us to move with freedom in our everyday lives. To achieve this:

  • Take a moment to sit on your yoga mat and breathe consciously.
  • As you exhale lightly draw the navel in and up as well as lightly lift the pelvic floor.
  • The power and potency of this ‘yoga superpower’ come with the gentle way in which we lift the pelvis floor. Avoid over squeezing.

The Crow Pose Series

The Crow Pose, or Bakasana, is great pose for building core strength, toned arms, resilience and unwavering focus. It’s also not impossible!

  • First, from a squatting posture take your hands out in front onto the ground shoulder distance apart. Spread fingers and press into each section of hands equally.
  • Next, walk heels together with toes pointed out then bend knees up in towards under arms like you’re creating a shelf for your legs with the triceps.
  • Look forwards of the hands (not down!) then lean forwards as you breathe, squeeze the navel and lightly lift pelvic floor to lift one set of toes and perhaps the other. Keep the eyes soft, steady and forwards.
  • Each time you practice try progressing or staying in the posture a little longer.
