An introduction to marshmallow extractNot to be confused with the campfire treat we’ve all enjoyed at some point, marshmallow comes from a plant and is also a herb – the extract of which can be procured for a number of different uses.
It has been used for a long time – from as far back as the ancient Egyptians – and originates from Africa. We’re going to look at Marshmallow extract and determine how to introduce it in your day-to-day life.
WHAT IS MARSHMALLOW EXTRACT?
Marshmallow extract comes from the Marshmallow Plant or Althaea officinalis, a flowering variety of Mallow plant, which grows in salty marshes near large bodies of water. This explains the name marsh + mallow.
Despite the first known sources of the Marshmallow plant being in Africa, today the herb is quite prominent in northern Europe, western Asia and down the Atlantic coast of the United States – mainly in damp areas. It is also often used ornamentally because of its pointed foliage.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
Marshmallow extract can be used to aid with the recovery of a sore throat or dry cough. It contains certain soothing properties through what is known as polysaccharides, which can help with inflamed membranes within the mouth and throat areas.
It can also be used to help treat upsets such as heartburn and mild indigestion. When added to creams, it can have a positive effect on mild skin conditions. Researchers are currently investigating how else it can be used, as such a wide variety of benefits have already been found.
