Comvita Beekeeper Spotlight: Meet Timothy

09/10/2020

Comvita-Beekeeper-Spotlight-Timothy

Humans have been beekeeping for nearly 10,000 years, cultivating safe and healthy places for bees to form thriving colonies. Some of the oldest parts of that tradition are alive and well at Comvita, where we’ve been beekeeping since 1974 (and for one of our founders, since the 1920s!). It’s important that we pass down the craft of beekeeping to new generations, and blend the old ways with the new to create the world’s #1 UMF™ Manuka Honey. So we’d like to introduce you to the beekeepers blending modern science and heritage tradition, passionately stewarding the bees and the ecosystem to create healthy, sustainable honey.

This is a conversation we had with Comvita Beekeeper Timothy Morgan.

Hometown:

Te Awamutu, New Zealand

How did you get involved in beekeeping (and when)?

It was by accident, one day I got a text to ask if I was allergic to bees. I said no and ended up with a beekeeping job back in 2013.

What do you love about beekeeping?

Everything to do with the bees. They are my zen, peace and tranquillity.

What have you learned in beekeeping or from bees that can apply to other areas of life?

I’ve learned a lot about stability. Even things like the trees we plant support the stability of bee colonies, everything’s connected.

The health of bees is so important to Comvita customers. What practices do we employ that keep the long-term health of the hive in mind?

The well-being of our bees always comes first. Everything we do is for them - it’s a world-class standard of science and caretaking.

What about beekeeping where you are in New Zealand makes the job special?

Beautiful scenery. I have lunch in a different spot every day that lets me be one with nature.

What’s one word you’d use to describe the feeling you experience when beekeeping?

Tranquility.

How do you incorporate Manuka into your daily routine?

My daily routine centers around Manuka - it’s the very reason I go to work!

What’s your favorite hobby?

Watching my children play sports, and looking after my bees.
