Manuka Honey Trials to Expand in New Zealand
As the world becomes more aware of the benefits of Manuka honey, consumers, clinicians, farmers and New Zealand’s government are looking to Manuka as a both a natural remedy and a high value resource.
To satisfy economic and consumer demand, Landcorp, New Zealand’s largest farming enterprise is dedicating 90 hectares of land in Te Anau, Wairarapa and Canterbury on the South Island to growing Manuka bushes and producing high quality Manuka Honey in partnership with Comvita and other agencies.
In order to assure purity and quality of Manuka products, a UMF® rating has been developed by the Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association. UMF® stands for Unique Manuka Factor and is a measurement of the unique, naturally-occurring activity in honey which is created from the nectar of the native New Zealand Manuka bush (Leptospermum scoparium).
You can rest assured that when you order your Manuka honey products from Comvita, you are purchasing the highest quality UMF® Manuka honeys.
We are New Zealand’s leading producer of Manuka honey and are officially licenced by the Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association (UMFHA) who independently test and verify our products and approve their UMF® ratings. If you would like to learn more about UMF® or you are wondering about the authenticity of Manuka products, you can visit the UMFHA website.
Manuka honey is delicious! Because Manuka honey is totally natural, there are usually slight variations in its colour and flavour but generally speaking it has a distinctive, earthy taste that is less sweet than regular table honey and is darker and thicker in texture.
The combination of its pleasing flavour and unique properties are making it increasingly popular with artisan food producers who are utilising not only the honey, which comes from Manuka nectar, but the bark and leaves from the bush itself in their food products.
Depending on where you are in the world you can enjoy Manuka flavoured beer, Vodka or even Manuka smoked bacon!
