Navigating the new normal in relationships

Change is an important theme in our lives, especially now.

With our daily routines and schedules changing faster than ever, it’s never been more important to focus on our 'relationship wellbeing'. This week as part of Comvita’s Wellness from Home program Dr Nikki Goldstein, sexologist and relationship expert, recommends taking a closer look at how our lives have been restructured and how we are navigating change with our partners.*

"A crust eaten in peace is better than a banquet partaken in anxiety" says the Greek storyteller, Aesop.

This period of change is an exciting era for relationships and dating, according to Dr Nikki, causing a great shake up for the better. We’re all guilty of ‘living in the future’ and planning ahead. We are being invited to slow down, practice gratitude for the small pleasures and truly be in the present. Taking this time for real connection means nurturing healthy relationships, for true wellbeing and timeless wellness.

Even with a slower pace, life still goes on for couples, so it’s important this change is properly addressed by evaluating life’s logistics, that may even need to evolve week to week.

Dr Nikki outlines the following tips for surviving and thriving through change with your partner:

  • Discuss expectations – We are not mind readers. No relationships are perfect, sometimes you need to put up your hand and say what you expect and need.
  • Be aware that your needs may shift – How you feel about the world and yourself right now has an impact on how you might communicate in your relationship so check in with yourself regularly.
  • Address conflicts quickly – Try to be aware of the real trigger, it may not always be your partner but potentially the current stress-fuelled climate.
