Soothing manuka honey combined with protective propolis in Comvita’s Winter Wellness range help boost the immune system naturally.

Precious propolis, created by bees, contains high levels of active bioflavonoids with well-known antioxidant properties. Processed by bees in the hive, it is a truly extraordinary substance. This completely natural bee product has a remarkable range of benefits. At least 300 natural compounds have been identified in propolis around the world so far, with 55 completely new to science. “Many of these compounds have exciting properties and characteristics that have already been identified in scientific research. But, we are still only beginning to properly understand the full potential of these compounds – it seems likely that there are even more propolis benefits we are yet to discover,” says Comvita’s chief technical officer Dr Ralf Schlothauer.

HOW PROPOLIS IS MADE

Propolis is a unique natural product created by honeybees who collect sticky resins secreted from trees and shrubs, combine this raw material with substances of their own, and use the resulting mixture in the protection of their hives. This explains how propolis got its name. Propolis is derived from the Greek words pro (“for” or “to defend”) and polis (“city”). Bees use propolis to defend and protect their “cities” (the hives they live in) from pathogens, and as a sealing material for protecting the entry of light and moisture inside. “For this reason propolis is known as ‘nature’s best defence’,” says Dr Schlothauer. “We mimic the clever bees by collecting propolis from our hives, using it as a key ingredient in many of our natural health products.”

Comvita uses propolis as the perfect partner ingredient with soothing New Zealand manuka honey – also a gift of honeybees with many natural qualities – in its Winter Wellness range. Comvita is New Zealand’s leading producer of manuka honey. It has formed deep relationships with landowners and land guardians in the most pristine and remote parts of New Zealand including the Central Plateau in the North Island (free from chemicals, sprays and toxins), where Comvita brings its bees to harvest nectar from the native manuka flowers.

A BEE’S BEST

Maintaining a strong immune system can be your best defence against winter ills and chills, and Comvita’s Winter Wellness range provides natural and year round support for the whole family by harnessing the properties of propolis and manuka honey.

Comvita’s Propolis Herbal Elixir, an all in-one herbal formula that supports wellness and soothes dry throats, is aptly named for it is an elixir indeed, containing propolis, manuka honey and echinacea. Their Winter Wellness range includes two Children’s Elixirs: Lemon, which has been specially formulated to soothe winter sniffles and tickles, as well as calm dry and tickly airways; and Strawberry, which includes echinacea for soothing immune support. This product is ideal for children over two years of age and it contains no artificial sweeteners or preservatives.

Comvita’s Children’s Lemon & Honey Lollipops make getting well more fun for both child and parents, also available as Lozenges with all the goodness of manuka honey with propolis and available in four delicious flavours. The Oral Spray is a special blend of manuka honey, propolis and essential oils peppermint, aniseed, myrrh and menthol to help maintain oral hygiene. “Nature is our pure source,” says Schlothauer.
