The Natural Wonder of ManukaAt Comvita, we’re passionate about harnessing the power of nature to treat and ease the stresses and strains of modern living and believe that one of the greatest natural resources is Manuka Honey.
There are many varieties of honey, each with a distinct flavour, colour, aroma and natural chemical content, but Manuka is a very specific class of honey produced only by bees in New Zealand who collect their nectar from the indigenous Manuka bush.
Traditionally, New Zealand’s Maori population used the leaves of the Manuka tree to create natural infusions, which were believed to help relieve fever and stomach aches. However, it wasn’t until the late 1880’s and the introduction of the English honeybee to New Zealand that Manuka honey started to be made. Scientific interest was peaked in the late 1980s and lead to research into its unique properties.
However, not all strains of Manuka have the unique properties that scientists have identified in high enough concentrations to ensure its purity and quality.
To guarantee that customers receive authentic products, only the finest Manuka honey that has been produced by registered licensees, tested and approved can carry the trademark UMF®. UMF® refers to the Unique Manuka Factor rating, which has since been formally established by the Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association (UMFHA). The UMFHA was established in order to set apart and market the type of Manuka honey that has special non-peroxide antibacterial activity. There are currently 57 companies across 46 key trading companies who are licensed by UMFHA to use the UMF® trademark.
