Work out your winter workoutGetting the motivation to keep active in winter is no easy task. So while the idea of taking a break from exercise in winter sounds appealing and validated by endless excuses (my favourite - it’s too cold), we really should remain active during the colder months to keep us happy and healthy.
Give yourself a chance to adjust to your new workout routine, be flexible with your schedule and remember any exercise is better than no exercise. No matter how slow you go, you’re still lapping everyone on the couch
Here are some tips for your winter workout:
Winter is a popular time for fun runs, so recruit some friends to sign up and keep your fitness on track to make it to the finish line.
You can either join a group fitness class or rally together your own friends, either way, group exercise is a great motivator when others are relying on you.
Dress appropriately for the weather.
You have a ‘winter wardrobe’ so it makes sense to have a ‘winter workout wardrobe’. Dressing in layers is the way to go as you’re able to take layers off as your body temperature changes.
Warm up and warm down.
This is really important to do in winter because our muscles contract in colder weather, which can lead to injury. Allow at least 5-10 minutes to warm up and stretch your muscles before you start any intense exercise.
Join the gym in winter.
You can sign up to most gyms on a no lock in contract, which is great when you’d rather be outdoors throughout the warmer months. Joining the gym is ideal in winter when there is less daylight and because gyms are indoors the ‘it’s too cold’ or ‘it’s too dark’ excuse will not fly!
