Bilberry is one of several species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium (family Ericaceae), bearing edible fruits. The species most often referred to is Vaccinium myrtillus L., but there are several other closely related species. Bilberry is most famous for its long use for eye and vision problems. Legend has it that during World War II, British and American pilots discovered that eating bilberry jam before night missions greatly improved their night vision. Bilberries then became a staple for Air Force pilots. Since then, extensive research in Europe has shown that bilberries contain specific compounds that can have beneficial effects on the eyes and circulatory system.

Echinacea is a genus of nine species of herbaceous plants in the family Asteraceae, which are commonly called purple coneflowers. All are endemic to eastern and central North America, where they are found growing in moist to dry prairies and open wooded areas. They have large, showy heads of composite flowers, blooming from early to late summer. The genus name is from the Greek echino, meaning "spiny," due to the spiny central disk. Some species are used in herbal remedies and some are cultivated in gardens for their showy flowers. Echinacea was a popular remedy in the United States through the 1930s, until the introduction of antibiotics. In West Germany more than 200 preparations are made from the species E. purpurea. Commercially prepared salves, tinctures, teas and extracts are marketed using standardized extracts. Most commonly used to support the immune system, Echinacea is now regaining its status as a household staple. It is one of the best-selling herbal supplements in U.S. health food stores.p>
